» The 'New Rules' of Cocktails
This article could also be titled “Cocktail Bars to Avoid at All Costs.” Apparently there is a growing trend of haughty lounges enforcing inane rules—no standing, no groups larger than four, no chewing gum—and clinging to some notion of the “modern speakeasy.” There’s a lot of talk about “enhancing the experience” and “enjoying the perfect cocktail,” but I have to call bullshit on this one. A chauncey in a dress shirt drinking a $20 cocktail is still a chauncey.
I like a sharp suit and a nice drink as much as the next guy, but this isn’t the Roaring Twenties. You’re not Jay Gatsby. People just don’t act that way anymore; the ones who do are just being pretentious, which is even worse. Do you really need a list of rules to have a good time?
