Style Tips for Writing About Los Angeles

  • A person who resides in Los Angeles is an Angeleno, not an Angelino. Similarly, the neighborhood is Angeleno Heights. Yes, I know, the old blue neighborhood signs used to say Angelino Heights, but they changed those a while ago (here’s a current one).
  • This one should be easy: Silver Lake, not Silverlake. This applies to the neighborhood and the street. Nobody writes Echopark or Losfeliz, right?
  • Speaking of which, no, it shouldn’t be Los Felices. Feliz is a family name. The neighborhood takes its name from Rancho Los Feliz.
  • When referring to sides of town, let’s go with Eastside and Westside (both one word, both up).
  • Don’t ever, ever refer to L.A. as La-la Land. While we’re on the subject, don’t call the West Coast the Left Coast.
