Wired blogs about the challenges facing public transportation in L.A. and the MTA’s Imagine campaign. The challenges are obvious: There’s a lot of people here, and they’re very spread out. Big construction projects are expensive and tend to get mired in logstics and red tape.
A few proposed ideas include more rail service (yes), more Metro Rapid Buses (OK) and some techniques to improve freeway congestion (uh, won’t that just mean more cars?). Can we just get this shit going already? Mobility is the most important issue facing Los Angeles right now. Do whatever you have to do; this is not a problem that will fix itself. It’s going to take a lot of money, yes, and also time, because the whole culture—the way people think about getting around—will have to change. But if left unchecked, it’s going to get worse.
